David Katz bio:
Born in San Francisco but long resident in London, David Katz is the author of People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae and Caribbean Lives: Jimmy Cliff. He has presented the monthly reggae vinyl night Dub Me Always in Brixton for the last 15 years and has supported Lee ‘Scratch Perry,’ Horace Andy, Rico, Mad Professor, Jerry Dammers, Don Letts, David Rodigan, Ras Kush, Tippi I and countless others, and played guest spots with Gladdy Wax at the Notting Hill Carnival, as well as the Tighten Up Crew, Reggae Roast and Rootikal; he has also toured Japan three times as a DJ, played at the International Dub Gathering in Spain, Reggae Geel in Belgium and Moogfest in the USA, and at select nightspots in the UK, USA, Brazil, France and Italy. Katz has also written and lectured widely on Jamaican music and culture, has co-produced and presented radio documentaries for Public Radio International and the BBC, contributed to documentaries and feature films, and has compiled and annotated over 100 retrospective compilations of Jamaican music. For over the last 15 years, he has also chaired panel discussions with reggae performers, writers, broadcasters and filmmakers, most notably at the annual Rototom Sunsplash festival.
